About Brightbox Web Hosting
Brightbox Web Hosting is made up of developers and engineers and they build things that they want to use. We’re obsessive about great user experience and passionate about high availability, performance and consistency, (though not all at once 😉 They take work seriously but they have a lot of fun.
Like Brightbox Web Hosting systems, teams are distributed, communicating in real-time throughout the working day. We’re a lean organisation, no middle managers or pointy haired bosses.
The development, engineering and operations teams all work closely together which shortens the feedback loop and means we get things done better. They support community by sponsoring events, or by contributing to free software projects.
Brightbox Web Hosting has its roots back in 2005, hosting Ruby on Rails apps on dedicated hardware. In 2007 they switched to providing virtualized services using Xen technology. Firmly focused on Rails deployment, they grew rapidly in popularity, hosting fully managed apps for large companies such as Amnesty International, Channel4, MTV and many more.
In 2010, they began work on a whole new platform built from the ground up. After almost 18 months of development, the new Brightbox cloud infrastructure was launched in September 2011.

Working for Brightbox
They work to ensure team have a comfortable, productive working environment, free from the bureaucracy and frustrations commonly associated with office life.
Working remotely
Every member of the Brightbox team works remotely, most from home. We’ve got plenty of systems in place to make the most of teleworking – a private Jabber server for short, daily meetings and chat throughout the day; VOIP conference calls; Redmine for project management; and a private wiki for documentation.
One of cofounders was interviewed for the 37signals book “Remote: Office not required”, which includes some more details of how we work.
Our Leeds office
The team is spread across two continents, but they have a base office in Leeds, United Kingdom. It’s just outside Leeds city centre and is easily accessible, with free parking and good public transport links from around the city.
Some of us meet up at the office once every couple of weeks, mostly just to catch up with each other and eat great food.
Support for the RoR and Free Software communities
They wouldn’t be where they are today without the work of the Ruby on Rails and other free software communities so they do what they can to support them.
We commit time and resources to make and release useful tools and scripts. We release libraries and full applications. They support grassroots events both financially and logistically, and of course by attending them.
